The College of Haringey, Enfield and North East London was proud to take part in the Arriva London Tottenham Garage Centenary Celebrations on Saturday (20 July). To mark the historic occasion of serving the local population for the last hundred years from 1913 to 2013, Arriva sponsored a Fun Day on Tottenham Green.
Out in force to promote Summer Enrolment, the College was giving away a free pair of sunglasses to anyone who successfully completed one of two challenges, set by our Schools of Construction and Sports. The first challenge was to move a metal hoop around a looped piece of copper tubing without touching it. Even the slightest touch sets off a loud buzzer making this a really tough challenge to complete. The second challenge was the ‘reach test’ which involved seeing how far you can reach in a sitting position. Crowds of local people tried each challenge and were delighted to wear their prized sunglasses on such a lovely day, and on what could turn out to be one of the hottest and sunniest summers on record!
Allan Southgate Tottenham Bus Garage Manager said: “The Centenary marks 100 years of the Arriva bus garage serving the local Tottenham community. That’s why we got the local community involved in the celebration. We also want to play our part in making sure that Tottenham is a happy and strong community.”
There was a great atmosphere at the Fun Day with free rides on a vintage Routemaster 76 to Waterloo and back, vintage police cars, bouncy castles for the children and a disco provided by Mystic Radio, a steel band, musical performances from reggae artists Yisrael and Ras, and many community information stalls for everyone. There was a serious side to the celebrations too, and the organisers and all stallholders were collecting funds for the North London Hospice.
Jane O’Neill Acting Principal and Chief Executive at the College, said: “It’s very important to get involved in and support our local community wherever we can. Attending events like the Fun Day gives the College the opportunity to promote summer enrolment and our courses to local people, which lead to jobs and successful careers.”
