Groups of learners from schools in Italy and Portugal visited the College of Haringey, Enfield and North East London’s Enfield centre for a warm introduction to the peculiarly English game of cricket.

New friendships were forged amid the fun and games of a day’s activities, which were part of the Comenius European exchange programme. The latest visit is only one part of the College’s involvement in the programme. Staff members have already visited schools and colleges in Portugal and Poland to share inspiration and ideas with their European colleagues. Later this year 16 of the College’s Sports and Public Services learners will travel to Italy as part of the scheme.

The Comenius programme aims to promote the wellbeing, health and fitness of young people across Europe, while also enhancing mutual understanding between different cultures and raising awareness of the importance of healthy diets and lifestyles.

Tracy Rees, Curriculum Manager for Sports and Public Services, explained: “The emphasis is on getting the young people to teach and learn from each other, by sharing their experiences.”

Three College learners gave a presentation on the rules and history of cricket, followed by some team-building and ice-breaking activities and then a chance to try out some practical cricket skills in the Enfield centre’s well-equipped sports hall.

Madalena Martins of the Escola Secundaria do Restelo in Lisbon, Portugal said: “Our students have been amazed at the great facilities and the range of courses the learners here can do. We’ve been making the most of being in London – we’ve seen lots of the sights, like the Tower of London, Tate Modern and the Globe Theatre, and we’ve fitted in some shopping too!”

Tracy Rees added: “It’s been amazing to see everyone bonding across the different groups. We’re thrilled to be able to host visits like this, and the upcoming chance for some of our second year Sports and Fitness learners to visit Italy with the same programme is a great reward for the hard work they’ve been putting in to earning their qualifications.”
