More people are opting for apprenticeships as a way to get into the workplace and progress in their career.
As a result, the College of Haringey, Enfield and North East London has significantly increased the amount of apprenticeships it offers, ranging from construction to accounting.
However for young people who haven’t got the minimum qualifications, which is often a Level 2 qualification or 4 GCSEs, including English and maths, the College has offered a solution by offering three month pre-apprenticeship courses. Open to young people aged between 16 – 24 and run between 10 – 14 weeks, learners gain the experience and qualifications they need to succeed on to a full apprenticeship scheme.
One learner, Zubeyde Ozsayan, is coming to the end of her pre-apprenticeship and will progress on to a full time Level 3 Apprenticeship in December. Currently working one day a week at Ulus & Co in Edmonton, where she will continue to work as part of her full time apprenticeship, Zubeyde, said: “I chose to do a pre-apprenticeship as it’s the best way to get into the workplace, plus once I progress onto my full time apprenticeship I’ll be earning and learning at the same time.”
Zubeyde currently works one day a week and attends College three days a week, but when she starts her full time apprenticeship, she will be in the workplace four times a week and will earn a wage. “I’m really happy that I chose to do the course,” said Zubeyde. “ It really has helped me get my foot in the door and I’m looking forward to gaining more experience when I start my full apprenticeship later this year.”
As well as accounting, young people can sign up for pre-apprenticeships in Business Admin, Construction, Health and Social Care, Hairdressing, Information Technology, Creative and Media, Science and Sports.
The courses run throughout the year and tend to begin at the start of each term. Anyone interested in applying can complete an application online by visiting: www.conel.ac.uk/preapprenticeships or call the Course Information Line on 020 8442 3055.
The College is also holding an Open Day at its Enfield Centre on Wednesday 28 November, 4pm – 7pm for anyone who would like to talk to tutors direct.
