The College of Haringey, Enfield and North East London welcomed Leadership through Sport founder, David Pinchin, (5 September) to speak to fifteen recruits on the new Leadership through Sport Programme. This exclusive programme, run at the College in association with Premier League football club Tottenham Hotspur and the Leadership through Sport charity is designed to help young people become leaders in the worlds of business, sports or community action.

The students, who were all picked from the College’s prestigious Accounting Academy, took part in a rigorous selection process to assess their leadership and business skills in making the final decision as to whether or not they would go through to the Programme. Each candidate took part in a series of interviews, as well as, activities leading and coaching young footballers. The candidates needed to demonstrate they had the ‘leadership spark’, as well as the ability to succeed in business.

The students selected will complete the Pre-Apprenticeship in Accounting and take part in the Leadership development programme. Learners will have interviews for Advanced Apprenticeships in Accounting at high-profile London-based employers during the Pre-Apprenticeship programme and two will be selected as Apprentices to work directly for the Tottenham Hotspur Foundation. The Leadership development programme continues during the Advanced Apprenticeship and the Apprentices will become mentors as new young people join the scheme.
David Pinchin explained more about the Programme when he visited; the long term benefits to the learners – and how to ensure they achieve career success.
He told the budding leaders and accountants: "Accounting is an extremely valuable skill. The ability to interpret numbers in accordance with accounting standards is essential to any business person. Remember however you are not on this course to become accountants but leaders either in business, sports or community management."
Tracey Kiangebi is delighted to be participating in the Programme. She said: “My long term goal is to work in management, but I want to make sure that I have the full range of skills especially being able to support and develop staff and a team. The Leadership through Sport Programme gives me the support I need to learn those skills.”
Fellow learner Ronan Liley said: “Knowing what you want in life is the hardest thing for me. The Leadership through Sport Programme gives me the structure and opportunities to experiment, make my mind up and then really go after what I want.”

Paul Head, Principal and Chief Executivesaid: “The College is delighted to be working with such a top flight premier league club, which also has an excellent reputation for meaningful community outreach and involvement.  The Leadership through Sport Programme will help learners gain the skills and experience they need to impress employers and succeed in their workplaces.”
