Learners at the College of Haringey, Enfield and North East London gave a presentation about their work in social enterprise during an employability conference recently.

The conference in north London on March 25 raised awareness about learners with learning disabilities and opening up employment opportunities.

The College’s curriculum area of Supported Learning recently received a grant of £4,000 towards social enterprise and the Supported Learning Shop.

The presentation aimed to promote the work of the students and how they plan to use the money to further develop the shop, which is located at the College’s Tottenham Centre.  It sells stationery and art materials to students and staff, as well as cards and crafts that Supported Learners make in their Enterprise Projects.

Tristan Aduu, Shannon Phidd and Lejaune Westney (who are all studying their second year of the Edexcel Skills for Working Life course) presented their ideas at the conference along with Harriet Fisher, Curriculum Manager for Supported Learning.  Franklyn Mitchell, Job Coach from Supported Learning, also attended.

Ms Fisher said: “It’s important for the students to be involved in the presentation as it gives them the opportunity to speak for themselves and to tell other students, educational professionals and potential employers about the work they do and the skills that they have.

“It also raises awareness of the potential for students with learning disabilities to work, and also learn work-based skills.”

Lejaune said he “enjoyed working in the shop” and he appreciated the opportunity to speak about it during the presentation.

He also said that the students who attended the employability conference were able to gain more experience in team work and various work skills.

The Supported Learners have also been designing and making bags as part of the Young Enterprise scheme, which aims to inspire young people to learn and succeed through enterprise.

The students were selling these bags at Spitalfields Market on March 31.
