The College of Haringey, Enfield and North East London’s recently formed rugby team played their first tournament at London Skolars RFC (14 March 2012).
The team, which is based at the College’s Enfield Centre, faced the more experienced Southgate College Academy. Apprehensive, yet confident our Enfield side scored first with a fantastically worked try, featuring a lightning-fast run from Basirou Jeiteh.
Tskikewa and the indefatigable Franklyn McPherson; the two best players in the Enfield ranks hounded Southgate throughout the game with their physical prowess, both relentlessly continuing to smash their way towards the try line.
McPherson said: “We had a sense of belief throughout the team and the feeling that if we could maximise the effectiveness of our one clear strength: our pace, then we could cause the required damage to the Southgate defence.”
Christopher Omole, showed impressive athleticism when he burst through into open space and hurdled over the last of the Southgate backs touching the ball down to collect 4 priceless points.
Matthew Newman held his nerve to convert a difficult kick and with only 10 minutes remaining Enfield were within 8 points of taking the match. The final score 24-20; a defeat but one in which Enfield gave everything, instantly began rumblings of a potential rematch.
Peter Theori, Curriculum Manager for Sport at Enfield said: “Although we may have narrowly lost our first game at London Skolars today, we have cemented the future of Rugby at Enfield.”
