Career Academy Produces Fresh Ideas at Freshfields
Ten first year Business students from the College of Haringey and North East London were in the City of London recently to take part in a workshop at Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer, the major international law company.
The visit, on October 21st, coincided with their second year colleagues meeting Sir Stuart Rose and other business leaders
Freshfields employs 2400 lawyers in 28 offices around the world. Other schools and colleges in the London area with Career Academies were also represented.
The learners from the College’s Enfield site are members of the Career Academy in Business, whose aim is to raise the aspirations of Business students as they look to progress to higher education and employment.
Freshfields are committed to recruiting people from all walks of life, and the College’s students were encouraged to participate in discussions and present their ideas throughout the day. Upal Banerjee, Career Academy Coordinator at the college, expressed his pride and delight at the way in which the College's students conducted themselves.
Indeed, one learner received an award for his ideas and contributions throughout the day. Caric James, who received his award from Freshfields partner Simon Hall, said: 'I really enjoyed the experience. It was a real eye opener to visit Freshfields, to meet their partners and to realise that they are interested in us.' Simon Hall confirmed that 'Caric stood out for his contributions to our discussions and as a team member'.
Saziye Akun, another student from the Enfield site, presented her group's work to Freshfields partners and all the students. 'What an experience!', she said later. 'I was so nervous but I learnt a lot and I'd been well prepared by doing presentations at college. It was great'.
The College’s Career Academy is affiliated to Career Academies UK, which has around 110 affiliated schools and colleges. The Career Academy model ensures that there is a consistent approach to Career Academies across the UK, but allows individual schools and colleges to respond to the particular needs of their local community.
