The College of Haringey, Enfield and North East London attended the ‘MoneyWise Job Fair 2’ last week (13 and 14 January) to advise on courses, apprenticeships and traineeships, as well as offering free hairdressing and beauty treatments to visitors. Held at the beautiful Decorium in Wood Green, the College team had a great time meeting, advising and styling local people over the two-day event.
The MoneyWise Job Fair 2 is in its second year and was open to all comers. The day consisted of workshops, training sessions and the chance to speak to colleges and employers, such as Reed, Barclay’s and Urban Futures. Twenty-one of the College’s Hairdressing and Beauty students accompanied its course advisers to make the day as fun as possible and at the same time highly informative. The College students offered free cutting, styling and make-overs. One thrilled customer was so delighted that she insisted on donating a £10 tip!
Both Sandra Burgher and Lydia Pelopida, Lecturers in Hairdressing and Beauty Therapy, were at the event. Lydia said: “Attending the event gave our students the opportunity to work with a wide range of clients to a high standard. Each student was also able to complete theory and practical assessments at the event – which means that they will achieve more on their courses. The students also had a great time as well!”
Level 3 Hairdressing Apprentice, Jordan Bines added: “I’ve just started Level 3 Hairdressing after completing Level 2 with the College. Level 3 is fascinating and it has really honed my technical skills. Events like the MoneyWise Fair are brilliant because we get to have hands-on experience in live situations. It’s a challenge and that’s what we love about it.”
Janet Gardner, College Director said: “This is the second time that we’ve attended the MoneyWise Fair; last year was a huge success and we were pleased to come back and help again. It’s a great chance for people to see exactly what we do at the College and the wide range of courses available. It’s also fantastic experience for our Hairdressing and Beauty students. We have students from a variety of courses with varying levels of experience, including apprentices. It is the perfect chance for them to build their confidence.”
MoneyWise is a local project, set up by Haringey Citizen’s Advice Bureau to help social housing tenants feel more confident about managing their money. Project Manager for MoneyWise, Alice Webster, said: “We held the first MoneyWise Fair in October 2014 and we had such a good response from the public, there’s clearly a demand and it’s a key time of year. Today is about different organisations coming together and helping people find the right jobs or courses for them. We are really glad to have the College of Haringey, Enfield and North East London back on board again.”
