The College of Haringey, Enfield and North East London’s Hair and Beauty learners open the doors to the Hair and Beauty Salon at Enfield today (2 June) to raise a staggering £1036.27 as part of a Charity Day to raise money for the Cancer Fund charity in memory of former Principal Paul Head.

The Charity Day is part of a whole week of fundraising where all proceeds from bookings will be donated to the University College Hospital Cancer Fund. As well as regular clients, staff and learners have encouraged friends, family and College staff to come along for a wide range of treatments which The Salon offers including all hair services, facials, pedicures, manicures and hot stone treatments. Raffle tickets were also being sold for a chance to win several high end hair and beauty products.

The Hair and Beauty team hold a Charity Day every year and last year over £900 was raised for the charity Tommy’s Trust.  Carol Chapman, course team leader for Hairdressing,  who liaised with the charity  to set up the event said of the day ‘’It has been great working with the team at UCH to organise the day and  fantastic that Nick was able to come down and meet all the tutors and students.  Having Nick here and hearing him explain how the money raised will help patients and their families really reiterated the importance of these events and showed learners how they can use their skills, in a volunteering capacity.  The commitment and contribution of the whole staff team, learners and clients enabled the event to be so successful.”

Head of Fundraising at University College Hospital Cancer Fund, Nick Gilbert, visited The Salon today to see the time and effort which the staff and students had put in. He said: “We are thrilled that the College has chosen us as their charity this year. Cancer affects many of us directly or indirectly. There are over 11,000 patients currently undergoing treatment at the University College Hospital from the local area, Hertfordshire and Essex and this money will go not only towards them, but also to help the staff and nurses that work extremely hard on a daily basis. We want fundraising to be engaging and fun. What the learners at the College are doing here today is fantastic and exactly what we love.”

Course Team Lecturer in Beauty Flora Pitrakkou said “We always try and pick a charity that is meaningful to the students and also helps the local community. We could not think of a better one this year than the Cancer Fund charity, it’s a great way to honour the memory former Principal, Paul Head who is greatly missed. A lot of our students diversify after studying here and move on to a wide range of fields including helping cancer patients with their unique hair and beauty needs.”

Over seventy Level 1, 2 and 3 Hair and Beauty learners were involved with the fundraising treatments today. Level 3 Beauty learner, Meral Kucak, said “There’s a real buzz today and we’ve been really busy. It’s good to be able to give something back and a great charity to raise money for.”
