The College of Haringey, Enfield and North East London was delighted to present student Ben Ahmed with an iPad Mini this week. Ben won the amazing gift for taking part in the College’s Learner Destinations Survey 2014 – 15. The survey was sent to all students who graduated in 2014 – 15 to find out how many were in employment or education six months after finishing their courses. As an incentive to increase responses the College offered an iPad mini – and Ben’s name was drawn at random from all those who entered the survey.
From those who responded 40% are in work, 5% are self-employed and 52% are continuing in education of which 15% progressed onto higher education.
As a graduate of the College Accounting Academy, Ben is doing very well in his Level 3 Accounting Apprenticeship while working at the central London German bank Bayern LB. He said that he felt that he was “progressing and developing well, especially for me as I’m not that confident”. Always an introvert and not comfortable expressing himself in large groups, Ben has come a long way. The first day at the College when he came in for an interview he was petrified and ran back home. A call from the College brought him back in, and he went on to study in the College Accounting Academy to quickly complete the Accounting Diploma Level 2 in the Pre-Apprenticeship programme before progressing onto his Level 3 Accounting Apprenticeship. He plans to continue his studies with a Level 4 Accounting qualification.
As well as completing his apprenticeship Ben is participating in the Leadership through Sport programme. On this programme students had a ‘blind date’ with employers, giving Ben the chance to impress German Bank recruiters with his CV and personality. Selected for interview from this day, Ben was given the job in the bank.
It’s fantastic to see so many people employed after leaving the college”, said Kurt Hintz, Vice Principal for Curriculum and Learner Experience. “We are a vocational college so developing people with the skills that employers need is what we are all about and Ben’s story is typical of our young graduates who impress employers in the most prestigious organisations and secure fantastic careers as a result”.
