CONEL students participated in the Big Idea Challenge last week (Monday, 1 February 2016). The Big Idea Challenge is a national enterprise competition run by London Metropolitan University in partnership with NatWest.
The Business Studies students from BTEC Diplomas Levels 1 and 2 competed in teams, transforming their ideas into business models. The students had fun in a 2.5 hour ‘ideation workshop’ where they pitched their innovative ideas.
London Met University introduced the challenge, formed teams and helped the students refine their enterprise ideas. Toby Kress, Head of London Metropolitan’s business incubator described the event as a great introduction to the world of entrepreneurship: “This event enables students to start thinking about how to start a business, get access to support and develop the skills to make it happen.”
Starting a business can be challenging yet rewarding and this workshop showed CONEL students the process from conceptualising an idea right though to implementation. The students were encouraged to dream big and make it work.
The winning team, who were awarded with wireless speakers, delivered a fantastic pitch on creating an investor app. The investor app provides convenience and an excellent link to pursue businesses or get investments. Other business models pitched were a clothing line, a social media platform and an enterprise providing Wi-Fi, charging facilities for use underground.
Mirce-Francisco Viera, a Level 3 Business Studies student said: “This was a great opportunity to collaborate in a team and organise ideas.” Mirce who is planning to study Business at University states: “This challenge has inspired me to be more optimistic about going into business.”
Curriculum Manager for Business, Mandy Hayward added: “It was great to witness student focussed learning, learning from competition and building links with Universities for the future.”
For the next stage of the competition, the students will put forward their ideas via an online application. The best team will take part in an all-day intensive Boot Camp hosted by NatWest on 4th March 2016. The winning team will represent CONEL against 10 other colleges and will get coaching from incredible mentors at NatWest, Microsoft and Unilever.
The finalists will have pitch videos made which will demonstrate their entrepreneurial drive. This can be used as a great tool to become a stronger candidate when they apply for University or jobs. Competitors also have the chance to win fantastic prizes including free websites, internships and continued mentorship.
