The College of Haringey, Enfield and North East London's Games Development learner Andre Ferreira, has been selected to compete in this year's final of a WorldSkills UK competition. Andre won a speed modelling challenge earlier in the year, competing against 50 other Games Development learners across London. Now he's going to Birmingham to compete in the Finals and the pressure is on.

Andre (17) who formerly attended local secondary school Park View Academy where he studied IT joined the College last year. Impressed by the Games Development course's excellent reputation, Andre is now in the second year of his course. His tutor Gary Beswick, put him forward to enter the World Skills competition due to his impressive ability.

"I'm looking forward to the stress of competing," said Andre "I know that sounds strange but this will be a great experience for me. It will show to employers that I can create a whole games environment in three days. That's the sort of work they expect from their employees. I get to stay in a four star hotel too, which I'm also looking forward to."

The College's Games Design course gives students industry standard skills in the development of computer games. Learners study games design, 3D modelling and games environments so that they can create games of their own from an initial idea to the final product. Students use top graphics package Maya used on films, such as, Avatar and Toy Story. Students use another programme, Unity known as the 'game engine' to make the games work.

Jane O'Neill Interim Principal and Chief Executive said: "I congratulate Andre for his success so far and I hope he brings back a gold medal from Birmingham as a WorldSkills Champion."

Last year the College also produced award winning students at World Skills UK.

Dominic L'Esprit brought back bronze and Michael Elesheku was Highly Commended, placing the College amongst the top four nationally for Games Design.
