The College of Haringey, Enfield and North East London welcomed two top industry gurus last Thursday (27th March) to help aspirational Creative students gain an insight into the media opportunities that potentially await them. Ken Lennox, an internationally well-known photographer with a portfolio including iconic images of Princess Diana, Mick Jagger and Beyonce was accompanied by Quason Matthews, a young and acclaimed film producer. Quason has worked with top artists such as Misha B, Wiley and many more.
Both Ken and Quason gave detailed accounts of their professional experience, presentations of their work and practical advice for up and coming media students who are passionate about careers in the media. Ken advised the students to never stop learning: “The more you learn, the more you earn.” The students also took an active part in the lecture, connecting microphones to both speakers and filming the event to upload to the College’s virtual learning environment, E-Zone.
In a Question and Answer session, the students and guest speakers talked about what creative and media employers are looking for. Quason said: “You must be on time, if you’re late you won’t get called again and you need to have good manners and make sure you get on well with everyone on the production.”
Helpers and organisers Ngozi Ikwekwe, Augustin Muanda, Oliur Rahman and Jerome Haughton are all Creative Media Production Level 3 students. Ngozi, who will be finishing her course in June said: “This experience really gave me a deep longing and determination to succeed in the industry – I want to direct feature films and both Ken and Quason are happy to look at my work and give me constructive feedback.”
Sharon Wallace, Creative and Media course tutor said: “Events like today are important because students find meeting with practitioners truly inspirational and their coursework always improves as a result.”
