College student scoops prize in Hair Styling Competition
A College of Haringey, Enfield and North East London student has scooped first prize in the ‘Best Continent’ category at the Chris and Sons annual hair styling competition, sponsored by Babyliss. Hairdressing Level 2 learner, Meryem Velibas, won her award for her 17th Century Parisian themed creation, beating off stiff competition from more than 30 competitors. Meryem, who was head and shoulders above the rest, wowed the judges with her technical precision and creative flair.
Each competitor not only created a fully-styled model – including costume and make-up, but also an A2 sized mood board to show off the creative process and reasoning behind their styles. The competition was judged on three main criteria; technical skills, overall look and how well the style represented the ideas on the mood board. With only an hour and a half to complete the look, and the three judges assessing throughout, the pressure was on for all of the students competing.
Meryem said “I was nervous before the competition, but I found I really enjoyed it. At first I wanted to own my Salon, but now I think I want to do competitions. You get to show off your work, and it’s great for your confidence.”
Jane O’Neill Interim Principal and Chief Executive at the College, said: “The College is extremely proud of Meryem. This is the second win for the College in this particular competition in the past three years.”
“The competition is an excellent opportunity for the students to showcase their abilities. There is an incredibly high standard of work, and it is judged by industry experts who all praised the quality of Meryem’s work.”
