The College of Haringey, Enfield and North East London welcomed a group of 15 students from Northumberland Park School (NPS) to take part in a practical taster session within the Health, Care and Early Years department last week (Wednesday 18 June). The participants spent the morning taking part in exercises and workshops designed to give the learners an introduction into Early Years and Care. 100% of its participants rated the session as 'Excellent' overall.The group of students were part of the 'Focus on Your Future Morning' at NPS designed for pupils in Year 10, to give them experience of studying within their area of interest. The class who visited the College, among others, were made up of future Nurses, Care-givers, Paediatricians and Early Years Teachers.
The learners took part in four activities which demonstrated the various methods that Early Years practitioners use to teach and interact with pupils. The morning began with a dance session, co-ordinated by ex-professional dancer Mark Scott. Learning the R'n'B dance routine demonstrated the benefits of movement and exercise in early years and care teaching. The routine provides exercise for better health, encourages learners to understand and respond to instruction and is a method of encouraging interaction between groups of learners.
Following the Dance session the students attended a Creative and Arts class, where they were encouraged to experience and understand the benefits of different forms of creative play. With stations for arts and crafts, painting, musical instrument-making and sensory play, the learners were able to see how different exercises would benefit different ages and types of learner.
Equipped with their homemade musical instruments the students then moved on to a Music class, where they were introduced to the benefit of sound and music in learning and development. In groups the students worked with percussive instruments of all types to create a final rhythmic song. The class provided the learners with an insight into the importance of sounds based teaching techniques, which would be appropriate for all learners – particularly those with learning difficulties or special needs.
The morning finished with an evaluation session using digital voting pads, assessing both what the students learned throughout the morning, and how effective they believed the session to be. 100% of the students rated the overall experience as 'Excellent'.
Diane Liversidge, Deputy Headteacher at NPS said: "Myself and the students were blown away by the enthusiasm of the staff and the welcome that we received. The sessions were both fun and very informative. The feedback from all of the students was very positive."

We are pleased that the learners from Northumberland Park School enjoyed their session so much, and we hope to welcome them back full-time in Year 12."
